Watch: Rare 'ghostly' dumbo octopus spotted

Researchers using a remote operated vehicle captured deep sea footage of a rarely-seen, ghostly white creature known as Grimpoteuthis. Sometimes called the dumbo octopus for fins resembling the ears of Disney's animated elephant, the cephalopod was spotted two miles below the surface which makes studying them particularly difficult. “It’s not a rare species, but it's rare to come across one,” said chief scientist Chad King. The video will help researchers recognize other Grimpoteuthis and add to a library from which others can study this elusive octopus.
