Watch: Sinkhole Swallows SUV

A driver in Colorado had an unexpected and dangerous detour when her SUV was swallowed by huge sinkhole that opened up in the road in front of her. The astounding incident occurred in the town on Sheridan on Tuesday after heavy rains in the area had disturbed a pipe beneath the road which ultimately led to the chasm being created. Amazingly, authorities say that the woman behind the wheel somehow managed to escape from her vehicle before it plunged into the pit.

A young man who happened to see the scene unfold was able to capture the final moments on film. "I didn't think I would go to work one day and see a car fall into the ground like that," Tye Adams marveled to a local TV station. No doubt because he was safely on the sidewalk rather inside the SUV, he was able to have a sense of humor about what he witnessed, laughing that it was "$40,000 down the drain, literally."

Strangely enough, this is actually the second time that a sinkhole has eaten a car at that spot in the road as a police cruiser was also swallowed in a similar fashion at the intersection three years ago. In that incident, the police officer was not as lucky at the driver of the SUV as he wound up going down into the 15-to-20-foot deep hole with his vehicle, And, in an ironic twist, that same police officer was called upon to respond to this week's weird event in a situation that surely must have felt like deja vu for him.
