This week's new programs explore natural disasters, beginning with a fascinating episode from 6/28/96 in which Art spoke with geologist Jim Berkland about his techniques for predicting earthquakes. He reflected on how his work garnered considerable attention after he successfully forecast the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake which famously occurred during a World Series game broadcast on national television. Berkland, who passed away in July of 2016, also detailed what he called the 'Seismic Window Theory' which was the basis for his prediction model.
Next up, we travel back to 6/5/2002 for a riveting edition of the program wherein Professor Ted Bryant talked about his research into catastrophic tsunamis. He discussed how he wound up studying tsunamis and some of the factors which can cause these cataclysmic events. He also pointed to how a meteor strike would unleash tsunamis on the planet and how these chain of events could happen at an incredibly fast rate. Bryant's appearance on the program and his warnings about the dangers of this devastating form of natural disaster proved to be particularly prescient as, just 18 months later, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean generated a tsunami that killed a staggering 228,000 people.
These classic programs have commercials and breaks removed and are presented in multiple-platforms-- available on-demand for Mac, Windows, IOS, and Android. Many of them feature rare "5th" hours of content from back in the 90s when the show had a longer running time. We do include Art's beloved bumper music, which became such an indelible part of his program.
