This week's new programs feature conversations concerning potential threats from space, beginning with an episode from 6/24/99 in which astronomer Roy Tucker talked about the possibility of an asteroid striking our planet. He detailed how he locates asteroids out in space, the way in which these objects are named, and how the universe is populated with a rather sizeable number of such rocks of varying sizes. Tucker also talked about the dangers posed to the planet by an asteroid strike.
Next, we journey back to July 1st, 2002 for a fascinating edition of the program wherein author Ramon Lopez discussed the science of space weather and the potential hazards to arise from solar storms. He explained that society's increasing reliance on space-based technologies put us in a particularly perilous position as a massive solar storm could wreak havoc on the planet by destroying satellites and disrupting critical electronics. Lopez also mused about how the sun presents something of an overlooked challenge when it comes to journeying to Mars as, unlike with the Earth, there is no solar protection on the Red Planet.
These classic programs have commercials and breaks removed and are presented in multiple-platforms-- available on-demand for Mac, Windows, IOS, and Android. Many of them feature rare "5th" hours of content from back in the 90s when the show had a longer running time. We do include Art's beloved bumper music, which became such an indelible part of his program.
