First Official Loch Ness Monster Sighting of 2025 Recorded

By Tim Binnall

A couple visiting Loch Ness has been credited with the first official 'monster' sighting of the year by way of their remarkably detailed account of a curious creature they spotted at the famed Scottish site. The unnamed pair from London reportedly made the mystifying observation, which came to light over the weekend, during a trip to the popular tourist destination on March 22nd. At around seven in the evening, they were at the shore of Loch Ness when they heard "a very quiet splash sound." Turning their attention to the location of the odd noise, they were stunned to see something "large and alive and swimming in the water" approximately 150 away from the astounded witnesses.

Continuing their account, one of the witnesses described seeing a "hump" that they likened to the back of a "large seal or walrus" swimming through the water with its head submerged. Their initial assumption that it was such a prosaic animal was upended when they noticed a second protrusion around 5 feet from the first. In their estimation, "it was clear that the two humps were on one creature' that happened to be very long. Although they were unable to get a clear look at the oddity due to the darkness of the water, they noted that "it moved very gracefully and silently" before ultimately sinking back into Loch Ness.

The pair's compelling account was subsequently submitted to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, which gave the case its proverbial stamp of approval as the first recognized report of 2025. That said, as so often happens with matters of high strangeness, the designation is not without a bit of controversy as a compelling photo released by the Loch Ness Centre tourist attraction in March had previously been heralded by many media outlets as the first Nessie sighting of the year. At the very least, the dueling cases give Nessie fans something to debate at the pub while waiting for the creature to pop up again at some point in the weeks and months to come.
