Human Skull Donated to Florida Thrift Store

By Tim Binnall

Florida authorities are hoping to get to the bottom of a macabre mystery after a human skull was donated to a church thrift store. The curious case came to light on Friday morning when the Hernando County Sheriff's Office took to social media "seeking the public's assistance" with the weird matter. On May 16th, they explained, someone "dropped off what may have been believed to be a novelty skull" at the Jericho Ministries Thrift Store in the community of Brooksville. However, upon closer examination, it was determined that the cranium was genuine human remains.

While giving the donor the benefit of the doubt, cops are understandably still interested in locating the individual who left the skull at the thrift store to find out how the person got their hands on the piece in the first place and, of course, to determine if there was any wrongdoing involved. As such, the sheriff's office has called on the public for any tips they might have that could help solve the case. Eerily, the incident is actually the second time in recent years that a human skull has turned up at a Florida thrift shop.

In November of 2023, an anthropologist browsing for bargains at a similar second-hand store in North Fort Myers stumbled upon a human skull among Halloween decorations that had been pulled out of storage to be sold. The scientist quickly determined that the remains were real, which led to a police investigation that ultimately concluded that the situation was "not suspicious in nature." The two incidents should probably prompt thrift store managers in Florida and beyond to check their inventory, since it stands to reason that they could also unknowingly have human skulls in stock.
