Listen: Eerie Metallic Sound Mystifies Town in the Netherlands

By Tim Binnall

A strange mystery has gripped a community in the Netherlands after numerous residents reported hearing an unsettling metallic sound that some have likened to ominous apocalyptic horns. The eerie noises were reportedly first noticed last week and several quick-thinking witnesses managed to capture the bizarre event on video. When the recordings were posted to Facebook, no one could quite identify what may have been the source of the sounds, but one theory stood out as perhaps the most plausible. Some individuals suggested that the noises were coming from a crane that was quite possibly moving in the wind and, in turn, creating the unnerving sound that had captivated the community.

This was echoed by a geophysicist told a local media outlet that the phenomenon was likely the result of construction work noises being amplified and distorted via a pocket of warm air that rose up from the ground as the day drew to a close. "It forms a layer," he explained, "through which sounds, from miles away, can bounce back to the Earth." While that very well may be the case, until someone locates the crane in question and can connect it to the sound, the metallic noises that haunted the community last week remain a mystery.
