Roswell Police Department's New Patch Features Nods to City's Place in UFO Lore

A new patch unveiled by the Roswell Police Department features several nods to the New Mexico city's prominent place in UFO lore. Showcased for the first time on Facebook this past Friday, the insignia sports the city's official logo, which consists of a flying saucer at the center of an 'R,' and the words "Protect and Serve Those That Land Here" with a pair of alien heads separating the phrase. The cleverly crafted symbol replaces a previous official police patch that had been used for over thirty years and also celebrated the city's unique history as it depicted a blast brought about by something crashing in the desert.

The new patch will not only be worn on officers' uniforms, but it will also serve as the Roswell PD's logo for "printed and online materials." According to the department, the design was chosen after they solicited submissions from "law enforcement officers as well as civilian staff." A panel of police personnel subsequently narrowed down the entries to four possible options and then conducted an internal online vote within the department with Support Services Sgt. Trong Nguyen's concept ultimately coming out on top. While it is uncertain if replicas of the patch will be made available to the public, one imagines that Roswell PD could make a small fortune if they sold them at this year's UFO festival.
