Study Ranks States by Bigfoot Spotting Odds

By Tim Binnall

A new study examining Bigfoot sightings has identified what it claims are the best and worst states for spotting Sasquatch. Produced by the website Canada Sports Betting, the fairly comprehensive project compared reports of the famed cryptid with "population, recency, forest coverage, and climate" to produce a list of locations ranked by the likelihood of encountering the creature. Boasting the best odds was Washington State, where the study found one Bigfoot sighting for every 11,038 residents. Rounding out the top five were West Virginia, Oregon, Michigan, and Maine. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the list were, in descending order, California, Indiana, Louisiana, Arizona, and Maryland.

Not unlike another recent study that determined the most haunted states in America, the Bigfoot spotting project also echoes a similar attempt, released this past February, to rank Sasquatch reports. While that effort put Washington State at the proverbial head of the cryptid class as well, the remainder of the top five was wholly different, with California, Florida, Ohio, and Illinois rounding out the list. Once again, the dueling studies may serve as more of a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the elusive creature rather than a guide for where to find it. Perhaps the strangest aspect of these various paranormal ranking systems is that they were all produced by online gambling websites, which have become a rather weird recurring source for such studies on high strangeness.
