Video: Driveway 'Stolen' from Florida Home

By Tim Binnall

A Florida woman was left scratching her head and understandably upset when the driveway to her home wound up vanishing due to the handiwork of a scheming miscreant. According to a local media report, the bizarre incident reportedly occurred early last month in an Orange County community where Amanda Brochu had recently put her residence up for sale. Shortly after listing the house, multiple contractors inexplicably visited the home to take measurements of her driveway. When asked why they were there, one of the individuals indicated that a man named Andre had inquired about replacing the concrete slab outside the residence.

Bewildered by the weird situation, Brochu dutifully phoned the police, who tracked down the mysterious man and were told that "he just got the address wrong, nothing else will happen again." Alas, it turned out that Andre was far from honest with the cops as the driveway to the residence disappeared a week later. "I was in unbelievable, like, utter shock," Brochu's realtor Rocki Sanchez said, "I've never seen this before. I've never had this happen to myself or anyone in our office." Local authorities have launched an investigation into the strange case in the hopes of figuring out who removed the driveway and why they pulled off the unfortunate vanishing act.

As to the latter question, a follow-up story from a Florida TV station found that it is very likely that the driveway was simply destroyed rather than actually stolen. They explained that what probably occurred was a scheme wherein a ne'er-do-well hires a contractor to replace a driveway or do similar work, but 'accidentally' sends a check for more than what the job cost. The crook then requests a refund of the extra money and receives it before the contractor learns that they have been hoodwinked when the original check later bounces. In Brochu's case, the work was likely done before that realization occurred and the individual who removed the driveway was likely too embarrassed or fearful of getting in trouble to reveal their role in the odd 'heist.'
