Video: Massive 'Mystery Cross' Found in Upstate New York

A construction project in Upstate New York has led to the discovery of a massive 'mystery cross' that presents far more questions than answers. According to a local media report, the peculiar object stands at least 12 feet tall and was found during the building of an industrial park in the town of Hounsfield. Seemingly crafted with cement, the cross-shaped discovery is clearly man-made as it sports pieces of rebar and a pipe at its center. That said, how the oddity wound up buried in Hounsfield, and its significance, are uncertain.

Asked about the unusual cross, Marshall Weir, whose company is developing the industrial park, indicated that they have no idea where it came from or why it was created in the first place. "I would say we’re kind of excited about it blessing infrastructure projects in Jefferson County," he jokingly said of the stone object that mystified motorists can see jutting from the ground like an ancient relic as they drive along a highway passing through the town. As to the future of the piece, that is also a mystery.

“I think at some point it will be moved depending on the buildout of this park, but I have no idea what the plans are long-term for this historical biblical artifact," Weir explained with a chuckle, suggesting that the stone cross found in Hounsfield is far from that. While work will be done to determine its nature and origin, should it simply be construction debris that someone surreptitiously buried in the town long ago, which seems like the most plausible scenario, it will likely just be destroyed. However, one cannot help but hope that the Hounsfield cross might somehow stick around, since it would make for a fantastic urban legend or quirky tourist draw.
