Video: Mexican Vigilante Dubbed 'Batman' After Busting Accused Thieves in Bizarre Fashion

By Tim Binnall

Mexican authorities are on the hunt for a vigilante who has been likened to Batman after the mysterious individual made an example out of several suspected thieves by duct-taping them to utility poles and castigating them for their misdeeds. The peculiar crime fighter, who prowls the streets of Lagos de Moreno at night, reportedly began his crusade on June 13th when he nabbed a man he believed had stolen a motorcycle. The accused ne'er-do-well was found taped to a lamppost with a sign indicating his alleged crime and the purportedly pilfered bike placed in front of him.

Amazingly, in the days that followed, another four alleged motorcycle thieves were caught by the vigilante and received similar treatment. In one remarkable instance, the faux superhero somehow managed to tape two men to a pole back-to-back, suggesting he may have a loyal sidekick lending a hand. As word of the bizarre busts spread throughout the community, a local journalist bestowed the moniker "Batman of Lagos de Moreno" upon the crime fighter who has won the hearts of many residents fed up with their motorcycles being stolen by miscreants.

As one might imagine, not everyone is thrilled with the vigilante's antics. Authorities in Lagos de Moreno have understandably decried his unorthodox tactics, which appear to include assaulting the suspected thieves during their capture. "At this moment they are victims," a police representative said of the men found beaten and bound to the lampposts. To that end, while authorities are investigating the alleged motorcycle thefts, none of the accused crooks have been charged with any crimes. That said, one imagines that the Batman of Lagos de Moreno presumes that his manner of publicly shaming the men might be enough to keep them and other would-be crooks on the proverbial straight and narrow going forward, lest they wind up humiliatingly taped to a utility pole as well.
