Video: Mysterious Chunk of Ice Falls From Sky in Massachusetts

By Tim Binnall

A home security system in Massachusetts captured the moment when a sizeable chunk of ice mysteriously fell from the sky and smashed into someone's yard. According to a local media report, the peculiar incident occurred last Wednesday morning in the community of Needham. Shortly before noon, the tranquility of the neighborhood was pierced by the plummeting ice, which hit the ground with a thud and, capturing how dangerous falling frosty objects can be, left behind a fairly sizeable divot in a homeowner's lawn.

Upon seeing the crater left by the impact, residents were understandably alarmed, but also expressed relief that the ice chunk struck only a lawn rather than a person or property. "If I was out walking, it could hit me or anyone," marveled one individual who lives in the neighborhood. That concern was echoed by another resident who mused, "I walk my dog every day on the sidewalk, kids walking around, so not a great thing to happen."

Cases of mysterious falling ice are not an altogether rare occurrence, although they more often make the news when the frosty objects smash through the roof of someone's house, as was the case in California back in April and Florida this past February. What makes the Massachusetts incident particularly unique is that the moment was captured on video by the homeowner's security system. As for where the ice may have originated from, flight tracking data suggests that it fell from a military aircraft that passed over the area shortly before the frosty object smacked the ground.
