Video: Mysterious Well Water Movement Draws Crowds in India

By Tim Binnall

A normally unremarkable well in India became an unexpected attraction after the water inside mysteriously moved in a rhythmic fashion for several days. According to a local media report, the weird phenomenon came to light on August 2nd when people in the village of Virparda first noticed the wondrous waves that seemed to have no explanation. When videos of the strange scene went viral on Indian social media, visitors began flocking to the 18-foot-deep well to see the curious movement for themselves.

As one might imagine, there has been no shortage of theories for what is causing the well water to behave in such an unusual way. Some observers suggested that the phenomenon could be connected to seismic activity or even divine intervention. However, scientists soon squashed the speculation and offered what appears to be the most plausible explanation for the wondrous sight. Experts say that the swaying motion was most likely due to a process known as groundwater recharge, wherein heavy rainfall seeps into the ground and causes a release of gas or air pressure.
