Video: Oregon Man Throws $200,000 onto Highway

A strangely generous man in Oregon caused chaos on a highway when he threw what is believed to be $200,000 in cash out of the window of his car. The very weird incident reportedly occurred last Tuesday evening as Colin Davis McCarthy was cruising down the road in the city of Eugene and, to the profound surprise of the other motorists, he suddenly began tossing handfuls of $100 bills from his vehicle. In turn, the rainfall of cash led to multiple drivers pulling over to the side of the road and scrambling along the highway in an attempt to collect some of the money. As one might imagine, police were quickly called to the scene as traffic had ground to a halt while starry-eyed motorists searched for cash.

Cops eventually located McCarthy, who explained that he was "doing well and wanted to bless others with gifts of money." Police subsequently instructed him that, if he kept up his shenanigans, could be charged with creating a significant driving hazard as well as littering. In response, McCarthy heeded their warning and ended the impromptu giveaway which he claimed had been a total of $200,000 in the form of $100 bills. When police returned to the scene the following day, there was no sign of the cash, which led the Oregon State Police to marvel that "motorists did a thorough job of gathering the loose money as troopers were unable to locate any further currency after the incident."

While the drivers who managed to get their hands on some of McCarthy's money were no doubt delighted by their good fortune, not everyone was thrilled with his unorthodox act of altruism. To that end, his family reportedly lamented to police that he acquired the cash by draining their shared bank account and, as such, they were now penniless. To his loved ones' chagrin, cops explained that since McCarthy had legal access to the money, he was well within his rights to distribute it by way of the bizarre drive along the highway. This had led some to speculate that perhaps the giveaway was some kind of revenge in the face of an impending divorce. Though that is merely conjecture, one imagines that it could wind up coming to fruition as a result of McCarthy's costly stunt.
