Video: Philadelphia Eatery Mystified by Massive French Onion Dip Shipment

By Tim Binnall

The owner of a Philadelphia mac and cheese eatery was understandably left scratching her head when the business mysteriously received a staggering 600 containers of French onion dip. The weird case reportedly began last month when Marti Lieberman, who operates the food kiosk Mac Mart, got an unsolicited email from a promotions company in Australia. While something about their offer of free product struck her as unusual, she accepted a sample to see if it would be a good fit for her eatery, which is what seemingly unleashed a rather strange snack food tidal wave upon the business.

To Lieberman's consternation, the eatery soon received a whopping 150 cases of Heluva Good French onion dip, constituting a titanic 600 tubs of the delicious dairy mix. Although she initially considered giving some of it away to customers, the sheer amount of free product gave her pause. That unease was confirmed when Lieberman posted about the situation on social media and quickly heard from Heluva Good, which told her to "stop what you're doing, we don't know where this came from."

It was later determined that the excess dip had somehow wound up with the Australian company that, in turn, sent the 600 tubs to Mac Mart to get the product off their hands. Their odd gambit worked in the sense that Lieberman was ultimately responsible for disposing of the unwanted dairy mix herself. On the bright side, the bizarre nature of the dilemma that befell the eatery led to considerable local media attention that, for her small business, proved to be worth the trouble brought about by the hundreds of tubs of dip.
