Video: Purdue-Backed Earhart Expedition Finds Tantalizing 'Taraia Object' Was Submerged Trees

By Tim Binnall

A Purdue-backed expedition in search of Amelia Earhart's lost plane found that a tantalizing anomaly suspected of being the missing aircraft was actually just a cluster of submerged trees. The much-discussed project, which was over a year in the making, saw a team of experts from Purdue Research Foundation and the Archaeological Legacy Institute journey to the remote island of Nikumaroro and examine a puzzling formation, first seen in satellite images back in 2020, dubbed the 'Taraia Object.' Bearing an uncanny resemblance to a small aircraft, the anomaly has been hotly debated in Earhart research circles with many theorizing that the unusual-looking shape could be the pioneering pilot's lost plane.

However, in an update posted on Sunday, the team indicated that the Taraia Object was far less fantastic than it seemed. Following several days of treacherous work in the waters off the coast of Nikumaroro studying the spot where the formation was seen, they determined that the anomaly in the satellite image was "likely a collection of large trees deposited along the peninsula’s sandspit." In the six years between the formation being photographed and the expedition, the group said, "a good portion of the debris had fragmented and washed away, leaving only a single Y-shaped segment." As for why the anomaly appeared shiny in the satellite images, they attributed that to a natural "carbonate veneer" coating the curious cluster of trees.

While the result of the project was undoubtedly disappointing to the team, they stressed that the mission had been to solve the riddle of the Taraia Object, which they ultimately did. "Perhaps no words better capture this expedition than Amelia Earhart's own: 'Adventure is worthwhile in itself,'" mused expedition member and Purdue general counsel Steve Schultz, "we set out to test a hypothesis, not to guarantee a particular result, and we followed the evidence to the end." With that, the Taraia Object joins the long list of alluring anomalies and alleged breakthroughs associated with the decades-old case that wound up being illusions or outright busts, with the mystery surrounding the missing aircraft continuing to endure.
