Video: Residents of Idaho Neighborhood Say Ravenous Rats Are Ruining Halloween

Residents of an Idaho neighborhood say that their spooky season has been plagued by ravenous rats that have invaded their community and are ruining their Halloween decorations. According to a local media report, the peculiar problem is currently unfolding in an area of Boise known as Boise Bench. At the start of autumn, residents began noticing that their pumpkins were being eaten by the rodents that seemingly appeared in the community for the first time this year. Beyond the devoured gourds, decorative bales of straw have also been targeted by the rats which use the material for their nests or take up residence in the festive bundles.

"I have sat awake at night just stressed out about the issue," lamented Kayla Groat, who has lived in the neighborhood for sixteen years and mused that it "feels like the rats are invading your life. It's a bummer." Her consternation over the rodents was echoed by fellow Boise Bench resident Pati King, who has been forced to end her tradition of carving pumpkins with her grandchildren because of the creepy critters. "I won't be doing that this year," she explained, "we're doing fake Halloween decorations and fake pumpkins." As one might imagine, people in the neighborhood have grown fed up with the rat infestation that has cast a pall over their spooky season, calling upon local officials to do something about the pests.

However, the city's efforts to tackle the issue have moved at a proverbial snail's pace, making the matter all the more maddening for residents. "It really is a feeling of something that's outside of your control," Grout observed, "you do everything you can to try to stop it, and it's upsetting." For now, wildlife experts suggest people in the community refrain from displaying carved pumpkins on their porch to reduce the amount of available food for the animals and skip decorating their yards with straw this spooky season in the hopes of putting a stop to the rats' reign of terror that has become a real-life Halloween horror story for Boise Bench residents.
