Video: Runaway Train in Netherlands Lands on Sculpture of Whale's Tail

By Tim Binnall

A disaster was narrowly averted in the Netherlands when a runaway subway train smashed through a barrier at the end of its line and wound up coming to rest atop an enormous sculpture of a whale's tail. The strange incident reportedly occurred early Monday morning in the city of Rotterdam when the vehicle came barreling towards a parking area where it would normally stop for the night. However, for reasons yet to be determined, this time the train kept going, careening through a buffer and shooting out several feet in the air.

Fortunately, the vehicle did not plummet to the ground 33 feet below because it managed to land on the fin of a whale's tail sculpture that had been installed at the railway station two decades ago. The timing of the strange event was equally fortuitous as all of the passengers had previously departed prior to the incident and only the operator, who was unharmed, was aboard the vehicle at the time of the crash. Amazingly, the title of the artwork turned out to be rather prophetic as it is actually named 'Saved by the Whale's Tail.'
