Video: Russia Claims to Have Shot Down a Mysterious Ball-Shaped UFO

By Tim Binnall

In a curious case out of Russia, an anti-aircraft defense system is said to have shot down a mysterious object that has been described as a ball-shaped UFO. The strange incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening in the Rostov Oblast region which is in the southern part of the country. Detailing the event on the social media site Telegram, mayor Vasily Golubev revealed that a "small-size object in the shape of a ball" had been observed flying over the village of Sultan Sala and he explained that, since it was apparently not something that belonged to the Russian military, "the decision was taken to liquidate it."

Beyond noting the object's curious shape, Golubev did not provide any additional details as to the nature of the oddity and, instead, simply assured residents that they had nothing to fear as "the sky is covered with anti-aircraft defenses." In covering incident, a local media outlet ran with the mayor's comments and declared that "a UFO in the form of a ball" had been downed over Rostov Oblast. Shortly thereafter, a different Russian news agency shared a video (seen above) that appears to show the moment when Russian defense forces shot down the object. In the footage, a fiery projectile can be seen ascending through the sky and ultimately exploding with a bright blast when it presumably struck the UFO.

As for what the weird object shot down over Rostov Oblast could have been, given the region's proximity to Ukraine, it has been suggested by one Russian official that the ball-shaped oddity could have been some kind of adversarial drone. That said, local residents have offered their own take on the peculiar event with some theorizing that perhaps the UFO had been alien in nature. It remains to be seen whether the Russian government will provide any further insights about the ball-shaped object or if the incident will remain a mystery.
