Video: Woman Snaps Selfie Atop Car Sinking into Frozen River

By Tim Binnall

In a bizarre story out of Canada, a woman drove onto a frozen river and then, in the process of being rescued, scrambled atop her car to snap a selfie before the vehicle was completely submerged in the frigid water. The very odd incident reportedly took place in the city of Manotick on Sunday afternoon when residents spotted a yellow sedan that was inexplicably speeding along the frozen Rideau River at what is believed to have been a whopping 40 miles per hour. The wild stunt took an even stranger turn when the car came to a stop and the weight of the vehicle was too much for the ice to bear, leading to an impromptu rescue operation launched by worried witnesses who had been watching the weirdness unfold and became concerned for the safety of the unnamed driver.

"I've been around water long enough to know if things go bad, it can get worse quickly," said resident Zachary King, who paddled a kayak out to the woman so that she could escape the perilous predicament. It would seem that the good Samaritan's timing was perfect as he and his fellow rescuers managed to get the driver onto the boat moments before the car completely sunk into the water. However, the group were taken aback by the woman's staggering nonchalance during the daring rescue operation as she actually stopped to take a selfie before boarding the kayak to safety. Amazingly, when asked what she was doing driving her car onto the frozen river, the woman simply replied "oh, just having fun. I'd totally do that again."

Fortunately the woman did not sustain any injuries from the jaw-dropping misadventure, though authorities did charge her with the unsafe operation of a motor vehicle. Sharing a photo of the almost entirely submerged vehicle on social media, police marveled at the "amazing job" residents had done "saving the driver by using a kayak and quick safe thinking." They also went on to use the incident as something of a teaching lesson that "no ice is safe ice." Sadly, it would seem that the selfie taken during the rescue has yet to surface, though we're hoping that the woman will come forward to share it now that the vainglorious moment has sparked headlines around the world.
