Viewing Comet NEOWISE

Comet NEOWISE is proving to be one of the brightest comets to pass our way in quite some time. Unlike many celestial objects, NEOWISE is visible to the naked eye, and can currently be seen in many northern locations about 90 minutes after sunset. Look in the northwest skies and find the Big Dipper-- NEOWISE is just underneath, and binoculars will reveal even more details of its resplendent tail (additional viewing tips here).

Photographers have been capturing amazing images of the comet all around the world. Pictured above, NEOWISE is seen over the village of Kreva, as a stork looks on, northwest of Minsk in Belarus early on July 13, 2020. This gallery features images from the ISS, Hungary, Ukraine, Germany, and Ireland. Enjoy the collection below of embedded images as well.

As the days go on, NEOWISE will rise higher in the evening sky, and reach its closest approach on July 23rd. Don't miss your chance to see it-- it won't be back our way again for 6,800 years!
