A jaw-dropping video from Rome shows the moment when a confused motorist got stuck driving down the city's famed Spanish Steps. The bizarre incident reportedly occurred last Tuesday morning when the unnamed man took a wrong turn in his Mercedes and began descending the legendary landmark to the astonishment of witnesses on the scene. Approximately halfway down the monument, the car got stuck on the stairs. The stranded suit-clad 80-year-old driver, who resides in Rome, was subsequently tested for alcohol but was found to be sober.
Why he wound up driving down the stairs remains a mystery as he could offer no explanation to police, suggesting that the misadventure may have been a genuine mistake rather than an audacious attempt at a shortcut. The man's Mercedes was eventually removed from the monument with a crane and the driver was cited for the wrong turn that did not appear to damage the monument famous featured in the 1953 film "Roman Holiday." The incident last week was not the first time a wayward driver has made headlines for cruising down the Spanish Steps as a Saudi national was busted driving a Maserati SUV on the beloved landmark back in May of 2022.
