Watch: Dust Devil Engulfs Player During Little League Baseball Game

By Tim Binnall

A little league baseball game in Florida had a strange delay when a dust devil suddenly formed at home plate and engulfed one of the players. The weird incident (seen in the video above) reportedly occurred this past Saturday during the third inning of the youth baseball contest in the city of Jacksonville. Seven-year-old Bauer Zoya was playing catcher for the Ponte Vedra Sharks when, out of nowhere, a whirlwind of sand erupted around him. "I was scared," the youngster later recalled, "I held my breath and I feel like I couldn’t touch the ground. So I kind of lifted up a little bit."

Zoya was not the only one frightened by what was unfolding around him as umpire Aidan Wiles later conceded that he was also unsettled by what he was seeing and, in the moment, unsure exactly what to do. Fortunately, his bewilderment over the bizarre event was short-lived as he quickly put his own concerns aside and ventured into the whirlwind to pull the boy to safety. To his credit, Zoya was unfazed by the incident and returned to the game after his father washed the dirt from his eyes.
