An eerie piece of footage from China shows an enormous flock of sparrows blocking the way into a village. The spooky scene was recorded by writer Jennifer Zeng while visiting the community of Sanmiaoqian on Thursday. In the all-too-brief video, the sky appears to be filled with sparrows and a dirt road is covered by a dark mass which, upon closer inspection, is revealed to be a huge gathering of birds.
Sharing the video on social media, Zeng marveled at the very strange sight and mused "many weird things are happening. Can anybody explain?" As one may have guessed, considering the nature of the internet, many people had theories for what could have caused the curious event. And, of course, the suggestions ranged from wildly fantastic to relatively plausible. On the more imaginative end of the spectrum, some viewers cautioned that the incident was Biblical in nature and a sign of the End Times.
Others posited that perhaps the event was caused by a 5G network nearby and some observers theorized that the birds were part of a Chinese program to combat locusts. While the precise reason for the gathering is unknown, one intriguing hypothesis is that they came to the village to feast on unharvested grains sitting left out in the open due to Coronavirus quarantines.
