Watch: 'Lake Monster' Appears in Background of Golf Tournament

By Tim Binnall

Television viewers watching the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament over the weekend were taken aback when they noticed a monstrous-looking fin suddenly emerge out of the water behind one of the players. The weird scene reportedly unfolded on Sunday afternoon as Keith Mitchell was putting at the 17th hole of Charlotte's Quail Hollow Club, which hosted the PGA event. The seemingly routine moment during the tournament took a strange turn when a rather sizeable fin popped out of the water behind the golfer as he was watching to see where his ball went on the green.

One eagle-eyed viewer at home noticed the appearance of the curious aquatic creature and quickly took to social media wondering what the oddity in the background could have been. In keeping with such proverbial guessing games online, the answers ranged from the prosaic, such as a turtle or a fish, to the fantastic, including what one individual dubbed the 'Quailness Monster.' An answer was eventually provided by the director of Communications for the Wells Fargo Championship, who told a local media outlet in North Carolina that the creature was most likely a very large catfish.
