Researchers studying biodiversity off the coast of Argentina captured rare footage of a giant phantom jellyfish. According to a press release, the wondrous encounter occurred during a Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition at a massive coral reef near Tierra del Fuego. While documenting an array of species that call the location home, the team stumbled upon the giant phantom jellyfish, also known scientifically as Stygiomedusa gigantea.
The creature, they marveled, boasts a bell that can swell to a whopping 3.3 feet in diameter and four arms that can grow "as long as a school bus." Fortunately for anyone who might come across the animal, the researchers explained, the monstrous-looking denizens of the deep "do not have any stinging tentacles, but use their arms to catch prey, including plankton and small fish."
