Watch: Webcam Films Sizeable 'Mystery Creature' Swimming Off Coast of Australia

By Tim Binnall

A webcam watching the waters off the coast of Australia captured footage of a rather sizeable 'mystery creature' that has left many observers stumped. The puzzling scene was reportedly filmed this past weekend in the coastal community of Scarborough, Western Australia, where the company Swellnet has a device monitoring the surf conditions in the area. Sharing the footage online, they marveled that the webcam had "captured this incredible specimen swimming on a moody, rainy Saturday."

The company went on to indicate that "in the office we're thinking it's a shark, and with the incredible size, a possible whale shark? If it’s a white, it’s an absolute submarine." As one might imagine, the footage subsequently prompted a slew of suggestions from online viewers who speculated that the anomalous form could be a whale, a disoriented oarfish, a narco-submarine, and, of course, the Loch Ness Monster visiting Down Under.

Interestingly, the incident was not the first time a surf webcam has been in the news for capturing something unusual, as a similar device in California made headlines back in December when it filmed some baffling UFOs over a beach.
