In a bizarre story out of New Mexico, a man allegedly murdered his cousin following a fight over the spiciness of some enchiladas they were eating. The strange incident reportedly occurred on August 27th in Albuquerque. What began as a fun family gathering over some drinks and green chile enchiladas turned ugly when Ervin Joaquin Gutierrez began boasting about the spiciness of his meal and insisting that his food was far hotter than what his cousin, Nathaniel Cavazos, was eating. The odd declaration was followed by a dare for the man to take a bite of the purportedly potent dinner. However, Gutierrez's challenge was rebuffed by Cavazos, who astutely noted that the enchiladas all came from the same meal they had made together, so there was no difference between the two plates.
While one might think that would have settled the matter, things quickly escalated into a physical altercation that culminated in Cavazos punching Gutierrez. In response, the bludgeoned man pulled out a gun and bellowed, "We're family! We're family! How could you do this to me?" Alas, as Cavazos walked away in what was likely an attempt to bring the proverbial temperature of the situation down, his cousin allegedly shot him several times in the back at close range, killing him almost instantly. Gutierrez has since been arrested and charged with murder over the deadly enchilada dispute.
