A nightmarish creation purportedly depicting a folkloric mermaid-like creature was recently found in Japan. The jaw-dropping 'hybrid remains' (seen below) were reportedly unearthed at a home in Fukushima. Said to depict a folkloric Japanese creature known as a kappa, the gruesome-looking discovery will be displayed this weekend at an art gallery in the city of Yonezawa. Believed to be one of only a handful of remaining 'mermaid mummies' in Japan, the piece is set to be sold in an auction at the event, where it is expected to fetch around $15,700. While it is uncertain what will become of the odd artwork, one hopes that it might eventually be examined by scientists as happened in recent years with similar creations both in Japan and in the United States at Northern Kentucky University.
