An anomaly hunter scouring NASA images of Mars for eye-catching oddities spotted a peculiar formation that bears a striking resemblance to a mushroom. The remarkable discovery was made by indefatigable UFO researcher Scott Waring, who recently noticed the suspected fungi in a September 2013 Mars Curiosity rover photo posted on the space agency's website. Based on NASA's explanation for the size of the area seen in the image, the anomaly hunter estimated that the Martian mushroom would measure approximately a half-inch tall with a similarly sized cap.
Waring's possible fungi find is not the first time it has been suggested that there are mushrooms on Mars as the tantalizing scenario has been put forward in headline-making scientific papers in 2019 and 2021. In those instances, as well as with this latest discovery, skeptics argue that the tantalizing toadstool is not organic and, instead, is a product of pareidolia brought about by rocks settling in a manner that appears amazing.
