By Tim Binnall

With Labor Day marking the unofficial end of summer, we're looking back at some of the weirdest stories of the season, beginning with a bizarre 'elf' that was filmed frolicking in a woman's driveway. The oddity's resemblance to the Harry Potter character 'Dobby' led to the footage becoming something of a viral sensation in June.

Another jaw-dropping story from the summer of 2019 saw an undetonated World War II bomb suddenly explode in a German farmer's field. Fortunately, the blast took place in the middle of the night, so nobody was hurt when the decades-old device finally blew up.

This summer saw no shortage of strange and unusual sea creatures caught on film, but one particular oddity spotted on a Lake Michigan webcam stood out as perhaps the weirdest of them all. An intriguing mystery that crossed our desk this summer and still has us scratching our heads centered around a baffling sculpture of a face that was unearthed in North Carolina.

With outdoor activity peaking during the summer months, it should come as no surprise that sightings of strange creatures occasionally occur as people are out enjoying the warm weather. Just such an incident occurred back in July when some fishermen spotted what they believe was a 'dog man.' Meanwhile, of all the strange and unusual catches made by anglers this season, the bizarre combo of a snake attacking a fish reeled in by a man in Texas was easily the weirdest.

One of the most eye-catching stories from the summer of 2019 was an eerie 'ghost city' that appeared on a lake in China thanks to a meteorological phenomenon known as 'Fata Morgana.' When it comes to weird creatures that left us feeling a bit uneasy this summer, what perhaps was the most unsettling was a truly bizarre bug filmed in Indonesia. Among the many discoveries made by scientists over the summer, behold this jaw-dropping 40,000-year-old severed wolf's head found in Siberia.

A look back at the strangest stories from the summer of 2019 would not be complete without the 'Storm Area 51' frenzy which became a bona fide phenomenon in July, capturing the imagination of the public, inspiring all manner of memes and copycats, and setting the stage for what should be a very interesting September 20th.
