Video: Would-Be Bug Smuggler Busted with Over 2,000 Hidden Ants at Kenyan Airport

By Tim Binnall

Authorities in Kenya busted a suspicious traveler trying to leave the country with over 2,000 ants secretly stashed away in his luggage. The jaw-dropping bug smuggling attempt was reportedly uncovered on Tuesday when Chinese national Zhang Kequn was stopped at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after previously popping up on the proverbial radar of officials for a similar caper last year. In that instance, he managed to escape justice, but was not quite so lucky this time around.

When airport security searched Kegun's luggage, they found a whopping 1,948 garden ants secreted away in tiny test tubes. Additionally, the would-be smuggler had stashed another 300 of the bugs into toilet paper rolls. In light of the huge haul uncovered in the bust, Kenyan authorities indicated that they suspect Kegun of being the head of a sizeable trafficking operation involving ants, which have proven to be particularly popular as pets in Asian countries.
