Science Education & Inventions

About the show

George was joined by science educator and television host Bill Nye (The Science Guy) for the first two hours of Friday night's program. Nye expressed concern about what he called a "crisis in science education." We don't emphasize science the way we once did, Nye said, especially noting the lack of science requirements in the No Child Left Behind Act. According to Nye, he hasn't met a single science teacher that thinks it's a good program.

Nye mentioned his show Stuff Happens on Planet Green, as well as spoke about some of his inventions. Nye holds patents on Improved Ballet Toe Shoes, Skipper Stick, and the Throw Tech Trainer, which aids athletes in learning how to throw a ball better by turning the wrist. Nye also pointed out that the most effective way to stave off dementia is to participate in physical activity. It stimulates the flow of blood and engages another part of your brain, he said. Nye took calls in the second hour.

Open Lines

During Open Lines, David, a physician and self-proclaimed skeptic from South Pasadena, phoned in to share an amazing experience that happened to him in December 1990. While walking through an airport in Little Rock, Arkansas, David said he heard screaming and saw something that looked like a "streaky drawing" of his sick mother flying around him. David credited the inexplicable encounter with making him a more open minded person.

Samuel in St. Petersburg, Florida talked about how to protect oneself from a psychic vampire, which he defined as "a special type of ghost that siphons the life force from the living to maintain its own astral body." Samuel recommended victims of psychic vampire attack say or think, "Lord (or Universe), send down your white light upon me," and then visualize a brilliant white light shining down from above. The instant you do this these entities will banish because they are afraid of the light, he said.

George also played a clip from an audio recording he made 35 years ago with his then 3-year-old daughter Wendy. The last half hour featured The Great UFO Debate from 7/21/04, in which physicist Stanton Friedman faced off with astronomer Seth Shostak of SETI in a debate about the nature of UFOs.
