Panel: Roswell vs. Washington State

About the show

Guest host Connie Willis (info) moderated a debate titled "Roswell vs. Washington State" that focused on the pivotal UFO events of 1947, often dubbed the "Summer of the Saucers." The discussion evaluated two iconic but distinct UFO narratives: the Roswell incident in New Mexico and sightings in the Pacific Northwest, including the Kenneth Arnold sighting near Mount Rainier and the Maury Island incident near Tacoma, Washington.

Steve Edmiston, an entertainment lawyer and historian, was the main advocate for the Washington State side. He claimed the events in the Pacific Northwest were the true genesis of the modern UFO movement, saying, "Within the scope of four days in Washington State, the Summer of the Saucers launched." Edmiston highlighted the Maury Island incident as a foundational case, describing it as "the first UFO debris, the first encounter with Men in Black, the first government cover-up," and noting the tragic crash of two Air Force intelligence officers investigating the event. He also framed Washington as the underdog in the debate, admitting, "Roswell might be Coca-Cola. We're not even Pepsi. We're pretty off-brand in the back of the refrigerator."

From the Roswell side, Paul Semones, a forensic engineer, professor, and Roswell tour guide, underscored the depth of military involvement and documentation surrounding the crash. He pointed out that "Roswell never retracted the story that they had captured a flying saucer." Semones also revealed recent investigative breakthroughs, including new witness testimonies and artifacts, asserting, "We truly have the opportunity one day to perhaps find the smoking-gun document."

The debate also included contributions from investigative reporter Toby Martinez of the Roswell Daily Record and Jason Mattson, curator of the Lewis County Historical Museum in Washington State. Martinez highlighted Roswell's global impact, noting that the incident "made headlines worldwide" and remains "an enduring mystery that's debated today." Mattson backed the credibility of the Kenneth Arnold sighting at Washington's Mount Rainier, describing Arnold as "a serious, all-American kind of guy" whose report "really launched the whole Summer of the Saucers." Vince Ynzunza, founder of the media platform Pacific North Weird and co-founder of the Chehalis Flying Saucer Party, further bolstered the Washington side by detailing the breadth of eyewitness accounts around Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. He referenced Bruce Maccabee's research, which compiled multiple witness testimonies into a coherent timeline, arguing that Arnold was "definitely not a solo witness."

The conversation also addressed the role of government agencies and secrecy. Edmiston pointed to FBI investigations into the Maury Island incident, highlighting detailed reports and memos from agent Jack Wilcox to J. Edgar Hoover that suggested a high level of official scrutiny. Semones responded by noting the involvement of military officers from the atomic-capable 509th Bomb Group at Roswell and the presence of the US Secret Service. He explained how "Roswell was so significant, so genuine, that it garnered presidential attention."
