Edgar Evans Cayce, the youngest son of the renowned "Sleeping Prophet," Edgar Cayce, discussed his father's unique psychic abilities, the nature and impact of his readings, and the scientific corroboration of some of his most extraordinary claims. Despite his unique abilities, his son said that Edgar Cayce was a deeply ordinary man in everyday life. Cayce conducted over 14,000 recorded readings during his lifetime, with approximately 60% being physical diagnoses for individuals, his son said. In a trance state, he would diagnose ailments and recommend varied treatments. Patients who followed his recommendations meticulously, often achieved remarkable results, his son recalled, and theorized four potential sources for his father's insights: unconscious memory, telepathy (with living or deceased individuals), clairvoyance (seeing distant events), and tapping into "Akashic Records" or a "fourth dimension" where past, present, and probable future exist simultaneously.
Cayce's physical health, emotional state, and the "purpose" or "attitude" behind a reading request could impact its accuracy, and he refused to use his gift for personal or selfish financial gain. Instances in which he inadvertently revealed horse race winners or stock market trends caused him physical distress, leading him to stop reading until his wife agreed to screen requests. The intense demand for readings led him to overwork, said his son, contributing to his death at 67.
Edgar Evans Cayce shared a number of predictions from his father that he said came true, such as specific earthquake fault zones in the eastern United States that were later validated by geologists. The younger Cayce said that he inherited none of his father's gifts, and maintained that no one since his father has demonstrated such a "consistent and accurate track record" of psychic ability over such a long period.
