The Life of Chuck Barris

About the show

The legendary Chuck Barris discussed his life as a game show creator and host (and possibly a hitman for the CIA) as described in his autobiography "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." He spoke extensively about his television experience, creating such iconic programs as The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and The Gong Show. He recalled the first five episodes of the Dating Game were "unairable" because contestants said so many unexpected and X-rated things. Barris hired an actor who pretended to be an officious FCC agent and warned contestants that they could be fined or jailed if they said anything off-color. Laughingly, he said it worked.

Critics lambasted his shows, which Barris said "really tore me up," and he ran away to Europe for a while. He also said the pressure of being a celebrity was unbearable because people expected him to be like his TV persona. He did remark that the four-year run of The Gong Show "were the happiest days of my life," but said he was worried about the direction of the newest shows currently on TV and how far they would go to endanger or possibly inflict pain.

He avoided most of Art's questions about his alleged CIA work, but did remark that "you can get nailed to the cross for trying to entertain and praised to the skies for killing people." In the last hour, Barris took calls from listeners. A biopic based on his autobiography (directed by George Clooney) was set to be released shortly after the interview.
