Rendlesham's 45th Anniversary / Open Lines

About the show

Guest host Connie Willis (info) welcomed James Penniston, a retired U.S. Air Force Sergeant, who recounted his experiences during the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident in December 1980. Penniston described his military career, noting that he served under multiple presidents and retired as a technical sergeant after more than 20 years of service. He explained that he chose to retire early due to political frustrations within the service and that he took another job opportunity, which he never regretted. Penniston emphasized that while his rank is sometimes downplayed, his duties involved significant responsibility, including security for sensitive assets and high-ranking officials. He admitted that his silence about the Rendlesham incident lasted 13 years because the event was immediately classified and remained so until his retirement.

Penniston recounted how the Rendlesham incident unfolded, beginning as a routine response to what was believed to be a downed aircraft near the base. After receiving authorization to investigate, he led a small team into the forest, where they encountered a glowing object on the ground. As he approached, he experienced unusual physical effects, including static-like sensations, difficulty moving, and an unnatural silence. Realizing the situation was not a standard crash, he escalated the response as a potential hostile threat, despite being unarmed, and continued forward while other team members appeared frozen in place.

Penniston reported observing a small, black, triangular craft with no visible seams, rivets, propulsion, or conventional aircraft features. He revealed that he physically touched it to determine whether it was resting on the ground or hovering and found it solid and immovable. He noted strange warmth on its surface and later learned this may have been due to radiation. He said he circled the craft, discovered engraved symbols or glyphs, and, upon touching them, experienced a sudden flood of intense visual impressions resembling streams of binary data. Shaken by this reaction, he withdrew and decided not to touch the object again, concluding that the craft was non-human, likely unmanned, and unlike any known technology of the time.

Open Lines followed in the latter half of the program. Kenny from Louisville, Kentucky, described a strange experience while driving his semi truck: he pulled over, heard an unusually distressed bird chirping, and looked up to see a mysterious object in the sky. He recalled the object was a few hundred feet above him, moving slowly and resembling the Phoenix Lights. While filming it with his phone, he claimed his hands and camera remained steady, yet the image would not stay centered on the object, as if some external force or technology was interfering with the phone itself. Kenny speculated that the object may have been using some form of advanced technology, possibly magnetic or frequency-based, that affected his camera. He emphasized that the incident felt unsettling but compelling, and he suggested something unknown disrupted his ability to properly record what he saw.

Next, Denver, from Jackson, Mississippi, introduced himself as an ordained minister and military veteran. He discussed UFO phenomena and expanded on the Betty and Barney Hill abduction. Under hypnosis, Betty recalled being shown a star map by aliens. This was later corroborated by astronomers, who said it originated outside the solar system but within our galaxy. Denver shared his 1976 sighting near Topeka, Kansas. He and others saw a bright ball of light split into two objects, rejoin, and rapidly depart. A radio caller later confirmed seeing the same event. He expressed his belief that extraterrestrials are vastly more advanced than humans. He said they are capable of manipulating physics, teleportation, and materialization. He argued that some are already on Earth to protect humanity. He cited alleged UFO interference with nuclear weapons. Denver acknowledged that different beings may have different agendas. He maintained that many are here to prevent nuclear catastrophe and ultimately help save the planet.
