About the show

Guest host Richard Syrett was joined by writer-producer Jack Kelley, who argued that Atlantis was a real, land-based civilization located in the Sahara about 10,000 years ago. He explained that his shift from seeing Atlantis as myth to treating it as a serious historical question began in 2019 during a visit to Santorini. Seeing the ruins of Akrotiri, an advanced Bronze Age settlement buried under volcanic ash, made clear how powerful natural disasters can erase entire civilizations from memory. While there, Kelley encountered the work of Greek engineer and researcher George Sarantitis, whose approach to Atlantis stood apart from conventional theories. Sarantitis's ability to connect linguistics, history, and geography convinced Kelley that Atlantis was not a fanciful legend, but a genuine historical place.

Kelley outlined how Atlantis entered Western imagination through Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias, which describe a prehistoric conflict between a powerful Atlantean empire and an ancient Athenian society. Over the centuries, these accounts were gradually distorted by pop culture and speculative writers, particularly in the modern era. He highlighted Ignatius Donnelly's 19th-century book, Atlantis: The Antediluvian World, as a key turning point that popularized the idea of a sunken oceanic continent and linked it to far-flung civilizations. Kelley stressed that Donnelly's conclusions were limited by the scientific knowledge of his time, which helped cement misconceptions that persist today.

According to Kelley, the core breakthrough came from George Sarantitis' retranslation of Plato's original Greek. A crucial error was translating pelagos as "ocean" rather than its correct meaning: "sea" or "partially enclosed body of water." This mistranslation sent generations of researchers searching the Atlantic Ocean rather than the Mediterranean world that Plato actually described, he revealed. Sarantitis also showed that landmarks such as the Pillars of Hercules were symbolic rather than fixed at Gibraltar. By restoring the original linguistic and geographic context, Kelley explained, Atlantis emerges not as a lost oceanic continent but as a land-based civilization in North Africa, likely in what is now the Sahara, once fertile and populated, later erased by dramatic climate change and the passage of time.

Open Lines followed in the latter half of the program. Kyle, a first-time caller from Utah, described witnessing a strange fireball in the sky about 10 years ago that moved slowly and silently across the entire skyline for about 7 minutes. He said it resembled a jellyfish, with flame-like tentacles that appeared and disappeared, and ruled out a meteor because of its unusually slow speed. Kyle emphasized that the object moved steadily in a straight line and did not seem intelligent. He wondered whether anyone else had seen something similar.

Rob from Sugar Creek, Missouri, shared an emotional experience in which he and his girlfriend witnessed a slow-moving, human-sized whirlwind of leaves on a calm day with no wind. He described the phenomenon as controlled and deliberate as it crossed a ravine, turned precisely onto a rope bridge, and then moved directly toward them before passing through him, leaving him shaken and seeing bright white and rainbow-colored light. Drawing on his outdoor experience as an Eagle Scout, Rob said it did not resemble a natural dust devil and believed it was a spiritual presence, possibly connected to his girlfriend's aunt, who had died months earlier.

David from Wisconsin recounted a frightening experience from about 11 and a half years ago, when he awoke paralyzed and came face to face with a small, brownish extraterrestrial being with large dark eyes standing inches from him. He said he managed to break free from the paralysis out of fear, wake his wife, and she also saw the being as it fled their bedroom, making a rapid pounding sound as it ran toward the front door. David emphasized that the shared sighting confirmed it was not a dream and said the incident left his wife afraid of the darks.
