Nancy Guthrie Case / Spirits & Ouija Board

About the show

In the first half, true crime podcaster Joel Waldman discussed the baffling abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of TV personality Savannah Guthrie. He described the Tucson, Arizona case as garnering more attention and public fascination than all but a handful of notorious crimes he's encountered in his nearly 30-year career. Waldman highlighted the absence of a typical ransom demand, with only dubious "demand letters" sent to TMZ from an individual claiming to have information, who wrote that they have a criminal record involving burglary and therefore didn't want to go to law enforcement.

Waldman reminded listeners that investigations like this are complex and time-consuming, involving both local and federal agencies. He emphasized his trust in law enforcement, referencing their expertise and dedication. He also outlined Nancy’s daily habits, the timeline leading up to her disappearance, and the alarm raised when she missed a Sunday Zoom church service. A central clue is surveillance video showing a suspect dubbed "Nest man," who appears inexperienced as he tries to block a camera. Profilers believe this individual might have a medical background.

Forensic evidence at the scene included blood spatter on the steps of Guthrie’s home and a mixed DNA sample that is now undergoing advanced testing using genetic genealogy techniques. Waldman, who knows the Tucson area well, praised the commitment of local law enforcement, highlighting the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s efforts to gather tips and videos from the public.

In the second half, metaphysical researcher Karen A. Dahlman explored spirit communication, consciousness, and the Ouija board. She shared stories of her first experiences with ethereal entities she named the "Guardians," describing them as loving and radiant. Dahlman discussed consciousness as an energetic field, suggesting people can connect with spiritual awareness through practices like meditation or hypnosis.

According to Dahlman, ghosts are "a form of consciousness that is experiencing another dimension," sometimes manifesting as human-like apparitions, and other times as orbs, which she likened to "vehicles to transport consciousness into another dimension." The orb may encapsulate the spirit energy and allow it to travel and explore, she posited. She recalled a striking experience in Mexico where both she and a Victorian-era spirit were startled by each other’s presence, illustrating the interactive nature of spirit communication.

When discussing the Ouija board, Dahlman emphasized using it with a positive and open mindset, viewing it as a neutral tool that mirrors human intention. She described her own use of the board as a means of empowerment and self-discovery, explaining how she and her friends would connect with their "higher selves" and access subconscious insights. Dahlman also believes the board can help users reach a range of benevolent entities, from guides and angels to interdimensional beings and spirits.
