Haunted Bellaire House / Open Lines

About the show

Guest host Ryan Wrecker (email) was joined by paranormal investigator Kristin Lee, who discussed reported unusual activity at the Bellaire House in Ohio. Lee described the Bellaire House as a place whose paranormal reputation developed gradually over time. She bought it as a family home after two flash floods, but soon began encountering unexplained footsteps, voices, movement, and apparitions. Her first major experience involved waking to see a translucent male figure sitting beside her before it walked away and vanished. Initially, Lee attributed the experience to trauma, sleep paralysis, or another psychological explanation, but repeated incidents convinced her that something remained unexplained.

Lee emphasized a deliberately skeptical approach rooted in her background in psychology and behavioral science. She believes fear, anger, grief, and other strong emotions can influence both an experience and how people interpret it, so investigators should stay grounded, document what happens, and rule out ordinary environmental or psychological explanations before labeling something paranormal. She said she is particularly cautious about concepts such as spiritual "attachments" or assigning names to spirits because suggestion can create fear or lead people to fit later experiences into an expected narrative. For Lee, a good paranormal investigator doesn't try to prove that a ghost exists but to reduce contamination, look for independently reported patterns, and determine what can reasonably be ruled out.

Lee said she does not believe every unexplained event at the Bellaire House has a single cause. Some experiences resemble recognizable human personalities or people connected with the house. In contrast, others could be psychological, environmental, or something without an adequate explanation yet.

Open Lines followed in the latter half of the program. Brian in Seattle recalled visiting friends in 1998 and seeing an elderly woman standing near their porch, appearing completely lifelike until she noticed him looking at her and suddenly vanished. Days later, he learned from a neighbor that her mother, Berta, who had Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, had routinely crossed the yard to visit the home's previous owner. Brian later saw a photograph of Berta and said she was the same woman he had seen.

Dan from Michigan described lying in bed about 10 months after his mother's death when he saw an apparition resembling her floating at the foot of his bed. He said the figure was translucent and illuminated the room before disappearing when he screamed. Later, two roommates independently reported seeing a basketball-sized ball of light float from his bedroom window, pass them outside, and disappear through the home's front door.

Jared in Texas discussed what he called "Mall World," a recurring dreamscape he said he has experienced for roughly 30 years. He described an interconnected mall, airport, school, and surrounding city that he believes thousands of other people have also dreamed about, with some reporting encounters with recently deceased relatives there. Jared said people have even compared their experiences with a map depicting the purported dream location.
