Psychoactive Plants

About the show

Terence McKenna was an American ethnobotanist, lecturer, author, and advocate for the responsible use of psychedelic plants. He commented on the many works of literature and art produced in altered states, which he said "dissolve boundaries...and under the influence of the drug, we see beyond boundaries." He went further, theorizing that psychoactive plants "added to the behavioral toolkit of early human beings," and assisted in our upward evolution. McKenna also compared some powerful psychedelic experiences to the near-death experience, saying this may indicate some sort of "ecology of souls," pointing to a better understanding of what happens after physical death.

Later, McKenna spoke about his isolated life in Hawaii, only emerging for lecture tours. Halfway through the show, he started to take calls from the listeners, with the first one mentioning that he had experienced the "self-transforming machine elves" that McKenna popularized as an effect of the psychedelic drug DMT (dimethyltryptamine).

Due to power surges, phone service was disrupted throughout the show. Art also explained an April 1st prank that made his website appear to have been hacked.
