Fear of Flying / Difference Makers

About the show

In the first half, Ron Nielsen, a retired airline captain, military pilot, and counselor, explored why people fear flying and addressed key issues in aviation safety. Drawing from 37 years of experience helping individuals conquer flight anxiety, he combines his knowledge of aviation with clinical psychology to tackle both technical and emotional concerns. Commercial air travel is extremely safe, he said, pointing out, "You're more likely to get killed as a pedestrian than you are flying on a commercial airplane." Still, fear endures because of how our brains are wired from an evolutionary standpoint, he detailed.

He highlighted a shift over his career from concerns about mechanical reliability to worries about emotional control during flights. He estimated that between 25% to 50% of flyers experience significant anxiety, with millions either white-knuckling through flights or avoiding flying altogether. Nielsen emphasized the robustness of modern aircraft, stating, "Turbulence is not going to hurt you... Airplanes are designed and developed to withstand anything that Mother Nature can generate." He shared personal anecdotes about bird strikes, pointing out they rarely cause damage and that engines are rigorously tested to handle such impacts.

Addressing the experience of passengers during fatal incidents, he shared a perspective from a survivor of the "Miracle on the Hudson" flight, noting that "people get really quiet" rather than panicking, a counterintuitive observation to common cinematic portrayals. Encouraging education about both aircraft and one's own brain, Nielsen explained that anxiety is often driven by physiological responses beyond conscious control. Ultimately, he stressed that overcoming fear involves changing perceptions of threat: "If I can help you change the way you perceive what you think are threats, then they go away."

In the latter half, Temple Hayes, a spiritual teacher, community leader, and healing advocate, spoke about her journey toward becoming a "difference maker," and how individuals can own their emotions and live authentically to create positive change. She noted that everyone impacts those around them, stating, "If everybody does a little, no one ever has to do a lot." A pivotal moment for Hayes came in 2007 at the Omega Institute's Women, Peace, and Power conference, where hearing from a courageous Afghan woman inspired her to deepen her commitment to life-affirming work.

She highlighted courage as essential in today's information-saturated world, commenting, "It takes courage every day to wake up... and be centered and grounded." On living "out loud," Hayes explained it means being congruent with one's beliefs in all settings, not necessarily public speaking. She cited figures like Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Dalai Lama as sacred warriors who have embodied difference-making through their values and energy. Hayes encourages listeners to embrace their unique paths to influence, underscoring that meaningful change begins with individual commitment.

She stressed the importance of embracing life's challenges as part of a growth journey, urging people not to wait for perfect circumstances to pursue their purpose. "There's always things that are happening to us," she said, "but we learn how to row and flow with those things and to fly above them, so to speak." People can be difference makers in all walks of life, Hayes explained, noting that many "unsung heroes" make a difference without recognition. Looking at 2026, she expressed optimism: "I'm excited about this year... It's going to be a miracle year," anticipating advances in technology and personal transformation.

In the last half-hour, George featured a replay of his interview with preparedness expert Mat Stein from 8/3/15 on the dangers of solar flares and other threats.
